Hodinkee has been selling vintage (used) watches since March 2016. However, today they made the announcement that they're starting to sell a curated selection of modern watches (with vintage appeal). Among these are some TAG Heuer watches that we all love.

I thought most of these were discontinued? Are these old stock, or did TAG Heuer start producing them again?

Old stock I presume. The Autavia description says it's the last one. Bit overpriced if you ask me though.

That's because it's the "set" which includes the dash mount:

Man, i know they are overpriced. But i am happy to see how the telemeter get priced that high when i bought it straight from Tag Heuer boutique with difference at least 1500 usd.

Of course those were the days. Recently the Tag Heuer boutique are very 'stingy' with their discount offering.

I asked about the Calibre 18 Telemeter at my local AD about a month ago. I was told they couldn't get one to sell because TAG Heuer had discontinued the model. This Hodinkee site might be a good way to get a remaining item.

The local AD told me there's a database of watches they have access to, telling you what watches are available were.

I guess Hodinkee went through all the desirable pieces and got them in stock.

Well shoutout to my friend (not this forum member) and everone that 'pushed' me to buy that telemeter. It was a great buy. I was just purchased my monza and calibre 6 heuer back then, budget was not that much left, but my friend keep saying i should get the telemeter no matter what and the Tag Heuer manager approved the crazy discount. So i guess i've been lucky.

Where are you located ? There is still one unit left in my country i think. But i doubt you will get good discount or they will ship overseas since it Tag Heuer official boutique.

If you want a Telemeter, try eBay or keeping an eye out on WatchRecon - there aren't many for sale, but when they do go up they go cheap; they usually have trouble selling for much more than $2500 or so.

Let's go through one example: firstly, the "37mm" Carrera is 39mm
    2006-2007-102-960x741.jpg

This model was discontinued around 2007/ 8, so any stock is 10 years old

The price in 2004 was GBP1,650, which at the time (Nov. 15 2004) was US$3,650. Today, it's being sold at US$5,250. I'm a fan of the watch, and the idea of offering these NOS watches...but the prices are more than I expected for these older stock watches.

Let's see what this one goes for: https://forums.calibre11.com/links/302522522274

I respect Hodinkee, like their reviews, but don't necessarily agree with everything they publish.

There has been a cascading Hodinkee effect on the used watches market; with the prices they ask for - and people are willing to pay - because of the Hodinkee brand equity - is driving sellers on the used market to hike up their prices.

I have been noticing the value of Carreras going up, particularly mainstream models with no specific differentiator.
They end up being relisted over and over because the said value is not justified to the eyes of buyers.

The issue with online marketplaces for watches, with Hodinkee and previously mrporter.com (a fashion portal), is there is no room for negotiation. You just click buy it now if you are willing to pay the price, and often, it is higher than expected.

Agree. Quite what the right model looks like is still a challenge. Through other interests, I'm looking at what could be done in terms of e-commerce in this space, and it is difficult to find something that:
    a. Has manufacturer/ brand support
    b. Gives a value proposition to the buyer that is compelling (note I didn't say price ;)
    c. Offers something distinctive compared to everyone else!

This is my main point of contention with them - I don't mind them selling new TAGs, Longines, Oris models that depreciate heavily / are available for much much less elsewhere, because they're just another AD and that's what they do. But when even the best CV2113 out there struggles to sell for more than 1/3 their asking price for this, I can draw no other conclusion than that Hodinkee hopes to take advantage of a poorly-informed buyer for this one, and most likely more to come.

One point about the Hodinkee offerings: Hodinkee is apparently an authorized dealer (unlike gray market dealers), so the original manufacturer's warranty holds. In addition, Hodinkee is adding an additional year of warranty. I guess their other selling points are improved photographs and commentary with every item.

Snapshot from the Mr. Porter app.
    What do you see?
They already have the Kingsman connected.

Mr.Porter is part of net-a-porter, part of Richemont.
