I remember the gut wrenching post where this was mentioned stolen along with others in his collection.

Haha, plenty! In fact that was one of the few modern watches I'd owned up to that point.

Yeah, sucks :( I'm having a particularly hard time seeing Speedy Tuesday and Ultraman LE posts nowadays. My ST1 was really a favorite

Seen plenty of comment on that statement on social media this morning. I can't find the statement on the Rolex website, but Hodinkee are reporting it too, so I guess it's genuine.

It confirms what I've always thought - that whilst Rolex are not restricting supply deliberately, there is no incentive for them to ramp up massively or too quickly - to do so would risk quality and damage residuals.

What does grate somewhat, though, is the final sentence:
“Finally, it should be noted that Rolex watches are available exclusively from official retailers, who independently manage the allocation of watches to customers.”

In my opinion, Rolex are complicit in the selling of watches to grey market dealers by not properly policing the ADs and by not having a better allocation system. There is a huge wait list for new cars at the moment (I know, I've just ordered a BMW). But the dealers don't turn you away because of your prior sales history. The order goes into the system and they put you on a waiting list administered by BMW and quote you a lead time.

    I agree mate..
There is blame on both sides.
Rolex have been doing what they do for a long time and now AD's are dictating who gets watches. Which is what I've always suspected.
Factor in the huge popularity of the Brand in the past 5 years and you have this situation now that you can't get one.

I'm not too worried by the way. I don't want a Rolex at the moment and if I did I'm sure the only way to get one would be Grey.

I was interested in Rolex, but I'm not paying grey market prices - the watches aren't worth it. I am now looking at Grand Seiko instead, and liking what I see. Omega and JLC are seriously worth considering as equal alternatives too.

I was too for some time. I even "Put my name down on THE LIST" that was about 2 years ago.
I opted for the Omega Speedmaster Racing in place of a Rolex.

You can't go wrong with either of the 2 you are looking at. Good luck with the Search Mate.

Imagine being turned away by BMW and them selling 5 cars a year to flippers who will gladly sell you a brand new BMW for a 50% premium

I agree, if you can get on the list and you end up owning a sub at retail that's definitely worth it. It's a great classic and the current model is the best since the '90s imo.

Talk to any honest Rolex AD and they'll tell you - Rolex micromanages their AD relationships to a ridiculous degree.

Rolex knows exactly what's happening, and exactly who's doing it. They just don't care, is all.

In any case, why bother with boring watches like Rolexes, when we have this Other Watch from an Other Brand to enjoy: the brand new, one-of-ten Reverso Minute Repeater

If any of you guys are in the New York area or will be in the next week or two, definitely absolutely imperatively make the trip to 'The Sound Maker' exhibition that Jaeger-LeCoultre's putting on right now!
