I had an enjoyable hour browsing in the watches of Switzerland store in regent street this week. Amazing how seeing some watches in the flesh can instantly turn you off something you thought you liked!

Anyway I was particularly impressed by the grand seiko models actually… first time I had seen them un the uk.

I was in London this week too, so stopped by Watchfinder and Watches of Switzerland in the Royal Exchange. Have also been eyeing the Grand Seikos again.

IMHO, that watch has as much taste as the jury who elected this year's Ballon d'or winner… A total travesty (and this is coming from a live-long Bayern München hater) !

Had some time to kill while on a business trip in Louisville this week, so I went looking at watches. I have to say, I've never been one to buy into the hype of Rolex. I've always had kind of a love-hate relationship with the brand. But after trying on a couple of gold Date Just models, I get it.... Not that I could ever afford a $58,000 watch... but those things were just amazing.

That said, I've had my eye on getting a Speedmaster Pro for a few years now, and even though I checked all of these great pieces out, a Speedy is still what I have my eye on next!

Grand Seiko has always been an odd brand for me. This is totally my unconscious bias speaking, but it's just never been a brand that really interested me. I'd never seen one in person until last week, and their dials were absolutely beautiful - unlike anything I've seen before.

But at the end of the day, it's still just not a brand that ticks the right boxes for me.

We all knew it would be big but not this big
The charity aspect probably played a role but whoever bought this watch obviously has more money than he or she can spend. There are 170 pieces of this watch so it’s not the most sensible investment. I’m sure the 169 lucky rich people on the Tiffany list will be able to sell theirs for 300k or so now :) Not that they would need the money and showing it off at a cocktail party probably gives them more satisfaction.
Very strong prices all around at this auction. AP, Patek, Lange, Journe, Rolex, all very high over estimate. The couple of Heuer pieces also performed very well.
It’s bizarre that a bunch of young Rolex watches performed so well. Traded 50% over what you find on C24. A full set kermit sold for almost 48k before fees. There are +300 of these for sale on C24, some new in box, and none come close to this price.

Never mix alcohol and an auction, not a good result.

Watching that brought back memories of the PN Daytona auction, starring Aurel Bacs and Tiffany on the phone - that was hilarious

I believe it was already the same at the Phillips auction in Geneva in November.
Best to shrug it off as „more money than sense“, IMHO. There really is no good alternative explanation.
