Hi everyone! I'm turning 21 on the 22nd of March. Normally on holidays/birthdays I drive my parents crazy by refusing to ask for a gift so I've been nearly physically beaten into getting something nice for my 21st (I know, first world problems!). I've decided to get my first nice watch, A Monaco calibre 11, as the Monaco has always been my favorite watch since I was very young. The calibre 11 is a perfect choice for me as it is quite a faithful replica of an original 1969 Monaco 1133 and it's almost identical to the 2009 40th anniversary model aside from a few small details (and that crazy price!). My other choices would've been an Autavia or even a Rolex Submariner (although a new one is a bit too expensive). Any thoughts?

Congratulations on turning 21. If you like the Monaco, then the Cal 11 is the best, most iconic and nicest-looking iteration to get in my humble opinion.

A Rolex Submariner would also be an excellent choice - would last you until you turn 71 and beyond.

I do a lot of diving so the Submariner would've been a cool choice but just a bit too expensive (my parents are comfortable financially rather than very wealthy!). Still, the Monaco is my all time favourite watch. Hopefully they dont release a fiftieth anniversary model next year that makes mine look like rubbish............. :/

Monaco calibre 11 and Rolex Submariner are two particularly fine watches. imo there's nothing to match their style (except Sea-Dweller). They are both different styles and the Rolex is a fair bit more expensive. Either way, you can't go wrong with either choice, but I wouldn't stray away from these three.

The Monaco calibre 11 would never look rubbish, no matter what comes out in the future. With these class of watches, you're buying a part of history, a part of the evolution of the Monaco. The original Monaco has been superseded many times and the new CAW211p is a better engineered watch, but it doesn't make the original rubbish. My advice is never wait for a new watch to come out. It could be worse.

I do love the new 2018 Sea-Dweller with the vinatage red lettering although again it's definitely out of my price bracket. I'll be getting a 2018 Monaco but at a vastly discounted price online

What I meant by rubbish is if a 50th anniversary Monaco came out with a more accurate case design and round pushers (although since the 40th anniversary Monaco still had square ones it's probably unlikely)

Find a Monaco used or on the grey market, the depreciation on these can be quite steep. That way you'll be fairly insulated if a better one does come out and you decide to trade up for it

This is what I requested for my own 21st and I still wear it close to 48 years later. If you have liked the Monaco for years go for that

Thank you so much for the link but I’ve been able to find a brand new one for a similar price from a reputable seller. The only thing that I wish I was getting was the blue McQueen box but as far as I’m aware all new ones now come with a brown vintage Heuer box

 you could keep an eye out for the Limited Edition then, I'm not sure what price point they're trading at but I think it's a bit higher

Before there was the regular production Monaco Calibre 11 they're making now, there was a McQueen limited edition that I assumed came with the "blue McQueen box" you mentioned.

Is this what you are referring to?

This is the CAW211D. My watch above.

This is is the type of box it came with it (picture from the Internet) 24629-2011481730-01.jpeg

I thought he was talking about the CAW211A, since it's "in tribute to Steve McQueen" but the only sale listing I could find for one had the same box as above

Actually I think the blue box was available on the CAW211P all the way up until 2017. Again the brown vintage Heuer box I'll be getting is lovely but the blue one was if anything even nicer. That being said, I'm buying a watch, not a box!!!!!!!

True, but it is all part of what you pay for. I didn't get a wooden box with my Calibre 36, but I will be once some more arrive at the boutique.
