Hey guys, recently bought a carrera heuer 01 timepiece and within few days I discovered that the chronograph seconds hand jerks/stutter when sweeping, causing uneven sweeps. I bought it back to the TH boutique that I bought from and they compared it with their display unit. The display unit sweeps perfectly and acknowledged mine would need a warranty service. However I only bought this watch for a few days ago.
The initial options presented to me :
    1. Exchange with display unit
    2. Send in for warranty

I was not satisfied with those options telling them that I've only own this watch for a few days. Moments after they checked their stock and said they are out of new unit for exchange. Hence they are now trying to seek approval for another order to do a 1-on-1 exchange with a brand new unit. They advised me to leave the watch with them for further checking, which I did.

Actually what's wrong with the watch? Why does jerk that way? Curious to know.

If they refuse brand new unit for 1-on-1 exchange, which options should I go for? :/

Sounds like they aren't refusing a new like for like exchange. Just that they aren't sure they can get one. If it was me, I would accept the display unit but negotiate a partial refund to compensate for it being "used".

From what i understand Heuer01 is based on modified Seiko and it's tend to get stutter.

Now i don't know how bad of a stutter your chrono hand gets. But it's rare to see really smooth chrono hand in Heuer01 in my own experience.

If i were you, if you like the display unit and you think the chrono hand is wayyyy smoother, then you probably should get it.

If you can share some video of it's stuttering maybe we can get better understanding.

    Cheers

    Hi Otto William,

The watch is no longer with me but the stuttering is very similar to this video :

I've seen many heuer 01 videos on YouTube and they are smooth sweeping, consistent with the display unit.

I think my Heuer01 45mm running similar (if not slightly better) like that video you sent. But my Heuer01 43mm running smoother than that.

I am too lazy to make my video though. Sorry ;(

Hope you can fix it to your standard soon

    Cheers

I want to sending in for service because the accuracy is +10 seconds per day.

Even asking them how much it will cost. I am willing to pay.

But they said +10 seconds per day is still within their acceptable range and won't do anything about it...

Oh well i guess i am just waiting for it until it get worst.

Which time piece are you referring to? The 43mm or 45mm heuer 01?

Lol... Well cheers to that then. That's also my most expensive TH investment. Infact the first. Can't help instantly falling in love with it. That was the 99% fulfilled requirement that I want in a timepiece.

The stuttering is normal. I believe the intensity of the stuttering is based on the amount of load on the escapement from the mainspring. The watch you saw at the AD could have had a low power reserve and show no stutter. The oscillating pinion in the Heuer 01 will show more stutter than the vertical clutch on a Heuer 02.

Oh damn... They have however replaced a new unit for me in the end after waiting for the new unit to arrive. The smaller second hand were running smooth for both units though

So after experimenting this theory with the sales guy, this really does hold true. We used many units to replicate the behavior and found that if we wind less than 10 times, the chrono movement will be buttery smooth. The moment we wind more than that, slight stuttering could be seen. The more winding, the more obvious it is. Case close I guess. The guys in boutique laughed when they finally find out the root cause lol. Thank you all for providing some ideas! :)
